Oh, boy. Where John Sheriff goes, controversy is sure to follow.
So it's only fitting that some controversy has helped make Sheriff the Hot Chasers Fan of the Week.
Thanks to help from Blogspot investigative reporter Phomas Teele, it turns out Hot Chasers management may have been involved in a cover-up operation.
Call it Sheriff-gate, if you will.
The renowned tenor, soprano and page designer was originally slated to sing the national anthem before the start of the Chaser's Opening Night game on April 14. But Chasers management allegedly sent the wrong information to Sheriff, forcing the singer to miss the game.
But word is spreading that management did not want Sheriff to steal their Opening Night glory. One wild internet rumor claims he was shuffled off to the Business department in an attempt to put an end to his singing career.
"I have only six years, 11 months, 25 days, 18 minutes, 24 seconds before I retire," Sheriff said. "It's gonna take a lot more than Business to stop me from singing."
When he did not show up at the field, management was somehow able to acquire the services of the talented Playboy model Debbie Gibson, who filled in admirably. But the damage had been done.
"Yeah, we got screwed cuz we all wanted John there," Mike Lefkow said. "It's no wonder we lost. I hope John does a breakout on how bad that Gibson girl was. She's nothing but a dried-up old hag anyway."
"I can't wait to pitch," Rick Hurd said. "I'm in tiptop shape and ...oh, yeah it sucks about John. But hey, I'm in a groove and ready to take the mound."
Hot Chasers management has kept silent on the situation although manager Chris Wagnon said he was not involved and wanted no part of it.
"Look, I sit next to John every day," he said. "There's no doubt the dude can sing and he would have helped us. But I have more pressing issues. We have a game coming up and we don't have enough players. That's all I care about. Now does anyone have Bill Kolb's phone number? If you don't, get out of my office."
ESPN also was not happy with Sheriff's absence. They had planned to show the game live, but quickly pulled their cameras and announcers off the Willow Park field when they learned Sherriff would not appear.
After receiving many complaints from its viewers, the network plans to run a 24-hour marathon of Sheriff's greatest hits on ESPN Classic.
"You have to love ESPN Classic," said night editor Don Peterson. "John and I are always discussing that channel, so it only figures that they would honor John. I know Corey and Emily are really exited about it. Yes, Dennis, I think everything is going pretty smoothly right now."
But there is still resentment among the Hot Chasers. One unidentified Chaser says he believes some players are faking injuries and using work commitments as excuses to miss games as a symbol of support for Sherriff.
"Let's face it," he said, "if John can't sing, then I can't play. We all feel that way. It's as simple as that."
Sheriff refuses to make any comments about this latest controversy. But he said he was surprised by his new honor.
"How can I be Fan of the Week if I've never been to any of your games?" he asked.
Oh boy, the man lives for controversy, doesn't he?
