'Rakers pummel Dianda Plaza in rematch

CONCORD -- Now that's more like it.

Just as in their first game against heated rival Dianda Plaza, the Muckrakers took a substantial lead. But unlike the previous contest, there were no last-inning heroics coming out of Dianda Plaza, and the 'Rakers cruised to an 11-2 victory on Field 2 on June 28.

The Men of Muck took a 7-1 lead going into the top of the sixth, and they stomped DP's throat with a four-run uprising in the sixth inning. With pitcher Chris White totally dealing on the mound, DP was hard-pressed to equal their epic rally, when they scored seven runs in the bottom of the last inning to hang a heartbreaking loss on the Mucksters.

The 'Rakers were quite happy to have lightning not strike twice. A balanced Muckraker attack kept the pressure on and a comeback less likely. Scott Brama had his breakout game of the season, going 3 for 3 and driving in a run, White went 2 for 3 and drove in one, and Chris Wagnon also added a 2-for-3, one-RBI game.

Three hits and a couple errors donated by the Plaza enabled the 'Rakers to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first, with White and Dave Alcorn supplying the RBIs. The Mucksters put things safely out of reach when they scored four more times in the sixth, the rally touched off by Alcorn's leadoff triple, later to be driven in by Eric Leithliter. Wagnon, Brama and Dave Taxier singled after that, and Ben Enos plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Come back from THAT, Dianda Plaza! Oh, you can't? Too bad!

Part of the reason DP got down and stayed down was the continuation of fine play from the 'Rakers' keystone combo, shortstop Randy Striegel and second baseman Matt McCall. It was a play at third base that got the 'Rakers into a spot of trouble, though. A DP runner was called safe on a close play, and third baseman Reed Johnson let the umpire know of his erring ways, using one word in particular that for some reason the authorities find objectionable. So Johnson was ejected from the ballgame, most likely a first in the annals of Muckraker history.

But that's how it is in 'RakerLand. Sure, they're a fine bunch of cheerful lads, but there's a fire raging not far below the surface. Get too close, and you could get scorched.

Heartbreak for 'Rakers in loss to Dianda Plaza

CONCORD -- There is heartbreak, and then there is whatever the hell it is that happened Thursday, June 7 on Field 1.

There the Muckrakers were, cruising along with a seven-run lead going into the bottom of the last inning. Things were seemingly well in hand. And then .... and then .....

They say there's no crying in baseball. After June 7, we're not so sure about softball.

No, no 'Rakers that we know of teared up. The Men of Muck may have taken one on the chin, but they rose from the canvas, walked off the bruises .... and partied as per usual long into the evening.

Nothing stops the Muckrakers' drive toward excellence, not even a 12-11 setback to longtime rival Dianda Plaza on Field Uno.

Manager Matt Knauff's single plated Luke Abbott and Randy Striegel, giving the 'Rakers an 11-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Dianda Plaza scored a pair of runs in their half, cutting the margin to 11-4.

The 'Rakers didn't score in the top seventh, which seemed no biggie at the time. DP hadn't done much on offense all night, surely this one was in the bag.

But as the Mucksters well know, it ain't over 'til it's over. Suddenly, in the bottom of the seventh, DP bloops that had previously found 'Raker gloves were dropping in. Grounders that had gone into Muckraker mitts to die were suddenly finding the infield gaps. DP batters sporting 0-fers started spanking line drives. The 'Rakers even were able to record two outs, but they're still looking for that third out. When it was all said and done, DP had pushed across the seven runs necessary for the win. DP was understandably ecstatic. The Muckrakers ....... were stunned.

It may be hard to recall now, but a lot of good things happened on this day for Yer Heroes. Striegel tripled in the first and had a 3 for 4 game. Bob Brindley graced the 'Rakesters with his presence and went 2 for 4, singling and doubling and scoring twice in his first two at-bats. Eric Leithliter singled in a pair of runs in the first and went 2 for 3 in the game. Reed Johnson doubled and scored in the fifth. Also Enjoying multiple-hit games were  Dave Alcorn (3 for 4), Chris Wagnon and Abbott.

Knauff made a tremendous catch in deep center in the third inning, and third baseman Johnson instigated a nifty double play in the first.  Alcorn hustled his way into scoring one run, and nearly hustled his way to two runs, save for a umpire's call that did not go the visiting team's way.

And, let's face it, Los Muckereros are pretty much a shoo-in for the playoffs, and first place in the D-League East remains a possibility. There is still much softball to be played, including a rematch with Dianda Plaza.

And it's not even worth asking who partied harder after the game. In some areas, the Muckrakers are undefeated.

Muckrakers blast More Beer 17-2, go to 5-1

CONCORD -- They say it helps to have a short memory if you're a ballplayer, and the Muckrakers put that truism to good use on Thursday on Field 3.

The 'Rakers quickly discarded thoughts of the previous' week's 16-8 shortfall against Got The Runz, their first setback of 2012, and make short work of More Beer, 17-2, for their fifth win in six D-League outings this season,

In contrast to the tightly played games the previous two weeks, this one was decided early and was never in doubt. The rebounding Men of Muck scored seven times in the first inning and led 14-0 after three. It was, in short, what a good team does to a bad team, and, with all due respect to More Beer, this was an outfit that looked every bit the part of a team that had yet to win this season.

It didn't help that MB's pitcher had only the vaguest acquaintance with the strike zone -- the laboring right-hander walked five in the first inning alone. What really got the Muck-In-Ators off to the races in the first was Eric Leithliter's massive grand slam to right-center, scoring Scott Brama, Reed Johnson and Matt Knauff. After that, the 'Rakers kept right on a'rollin' and MB, well, MB did not.

This one showcased the depth of the Muckrakers. Making their '12 'Raker debuts were Ben Enos, Luke Abbott (two RBIs apiece) and Dave Taxier (a soft 3 for 3). Taxier benefited from the hefty offensive support and tossed the complete game, with MB going scoreless for five straight frames before picking up two gratuitous runs in the sixth.

There was even depth in the mascot department, as Sierra The Wonder Greyhound, accompanied by Lindsay Rich, made her first-ever appearance at a 'Raker game. Sierra, showing that team spirit, even helped the 'Rakers dominate the parking lot after the game. One would think the Mucksters have not seen the last of the swift pooch.

In short, it was a typical last-place-team-gets-smacked-down kinda evening. Johnson rolled out a 4 for 4 outing, Knauff went 3 for 5 and Chris Wagnon went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two driven in. Randy Striegel and Matt McCall continue to work like a finely tuned engine around second base. There was much  smoothness and effectiveness all around as the Muckrakers continued to look strong on top of the D-League pack.

P.S. To the guy who collects our cans after the games -- thanks for the lumpia! It was great!

Muckrakers dump Got the Runz

CONCORD -- Sometimes we over-think this whole softball thing. We get into strategy, lineups, alignments and whatnot and we can twist ourselves into knots over what -- a ballgame?

Sometimes it's really just a matter of going out and hitting, running and throwing as hard as you can for as long as you can -- and if it all works out in your favor, good on ya.

That was pert near the case last Thursday on Field 5, when two heavyweights of the D-League division clashed on a sultry evening. The 3-0 Muckrakers were there to take on 2-0 Got the Runz, a team that had put up 20 runs on each of its first two foes.

Clearly, this game would be about two teams firing hay-makers at each other for about an hour, and whoever blinked first would likely come up short.

Well, the Men of Muck are still undefeated -- you guess who blinked.

Scoring 20 runs and lashing 28 hits -- and needing each and every one -- Los Muckeraros eked out a 20-19 victory over GTR, moving to 4-0 and preserving their status among D-League's elite teams.

This one came down to the final inning. Finding themselves down 19-16 going into the top of the seventh, Yer Heroes rallied for four runs to take the precarious one-run advantage going into the bottom of the frame. Facing a high-powered GTR offense, pitcher Chris White capped his phenomenal night by tossing the ultimate shutdown stanza, retiring GTR in one-two-three fashion, the contest's final out coming appropriately on a harmless come-backer to White.

White? How about White-hot? All the right-hander did, along with his complete-game pitching prowess, was go 5 for 5, with two homers, a pair of triples, and five RBIs.

White tripled in one run during that crucial seventh-inning uprising. But, as is typical for the Mucksters, it was far from a one-man effort. Chris Wagnon continued his solid hitting (3 for 5, three RBIs) with a clutch bases-loaded two-out single in the seventh to plate the tying and go-ahead run. Matt Knauff (4 for 5, three ribbies) touched off the fun with his leadoff single. And Eric Liethliter broke out for his biggest game of the season, going 4 for 5 and singling in a run in the seventh.

The 'Rakers had fun in the seventh, but they had a blast in the first -- three of them, in fact. In what was most likely a Muckraker first, the team went back-to-back-to-back with homers, as Randy Striegel, White and Knauff all went yard as the 'Rakers roared out of the blocks with a five-run first inning.

Not content with that, the Mucksters then batted around in the second inning and scored six more runs -- yet still held only an 11-8 advantage. It was that type of old-fashioned slow-pitch slugfest softball.

GTR powered across eight of their own runs in the third and added two more in the fifth in moving further out in front. But the Muckrakers had a few more blows left in them -- not to mention one gigantic shut-down in the bottom of the seventh.

It takes a team effort to pull out games like these, and the 'Rakers were well-prepared. Striegel turned in a nifty game at short, Reed Johnson and Dave Alcorn at the defensive corners continually worked their ways on base on offense, and Matt McCall continues to be a menace at the leadoff spot. Catcher Brian Kroll has home plate covered and at bat enjoyed his first multi-hit performance of the season (3 for 5). The 'Rakers were also fortunate for the first appearance of the season of veteran left fielder Chace Bryson,

So, how about doing it all over again this Thursday? The Muckrakers and GTR are slated to meet again on Field 2, 7:20 p.m. So bring your popcorn  -- a lot of popcorn, and throw in a Big Gulp, too. This will be one game you're not going to want to miss.
