Good season everyone. We fell a bit short in making the playoffs but did finish a respectable 4-3 and as always dominated the parking lot. As usual we're going to have annual postseason pizza social at Rocco's on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. Let's dominate that Dominator! I'll make reservations next week so RSVP me if you're in or not.

'Rakers dumped by Carsen Designs
CONCORD -- Showing oodles of the intestinal fortitude that makes this team what it is, the shorthanded Muckrakers nonetheless sustained a streaking-breaking 13-9 loss to Carsen Designs on Field 3.
The Rake Guys had all sorts of reasons to fold their tents and slink off into the night in this one. Your Heroes were forced to go with a three-man outfield alignment, so low were they in numbers.
And early on, Don Dennler re-injured his uncooperative Achilles, making standing and catching and running an iffy proposition. Did Dennler beg off, ask out, call it quits? No, no, and nope. The man gutted it out for the full seven, despite being in obvious pain the whole time. And yet, not one complaint passed his lips, not once was "why me?" wailed. He did what he had to do, and it got done.
If the 'Rakers awarded Purple Hearts -- and the work order for the creation of same is being processed as we speak -- then there would have been a meaningful and moving award-pinning in the parking lot afterward.
As it was, the 'Rakers battled on as best they could. They came fast out of the gates, scoring five runs, highlighted Brian Kroll's (3 for 4) two-RBI single. But try as they might, runs became harder to come by after that. Of the Mucksters' 13 hits, none were of the extra-base variety. Still, enjoying multiple-hit evenings along with Kroll were Dave Alcorn, Rick Browning and Dave Taxier.
It's to the team's credit that it remained competitive as long as it did. But the end result was a defeat that snapped the Men of Muck's three-game winning streak.
It all sets up a season-finale like no other. The 'Rakers conclude the regular-season portion of Fall League with a D-League rarity, a doubleheader. The festivities kick off at 8:25 on Field 2. Come on out and see which 'Raker becomes Purple-Heart eligible.

Red-hot Muckrakers club The Guys
CONCORD -- To quote from the great K.C. and His Sunshine Orchestra, “shake shake shake, shake shake shake, shake your bootie, shake your bootie .... ”
Whoopsies, no, not that one. Let’s try:
“That’s the way, uh-huh uh-huh, we like it, uh-huh uh-huh.”
Better.
Whatever song you choose, the Muckrakers made it the right selection on Thursday, excelling in all phases off the game in an 8-2 dispatching of The Guys on Field 4.
Looking good, and feeling good, whether it be hitting, fielding or pitching, the ‘Rakers added all kings of good things to their ledger. They boosted their Fall League mark to 3-1, going two games above .500 for the first time since who knows when. And the Mighty Men of Muck won back-to-back ballgames for, again, who knows when, and if you do, please speak up because we’d love to speak to you.
After sporting a couple of exotic lineups in its past two games, Muckraker Nation went more old-school in this one. Welcome back Dave Alcorn at third base, and welcome back Brian Kroll behind the plate.
The more-traditional look produced some traditionally good team performances from Your Heroes, both on offense and defense.
The Guys slammed the ball at many a ‘Raker, but in each case the Muckster defender was up for the task, fielding the ball cleanly and doing the proper thing with it. Second baseman Mike Yurkus was a busy lad all night, flawlessly gloving Guys hotshots as well as taking throws from infielder left-siders Alcorn and Randy Striegel.
‘Raker outfielders tracked down everything hit their way, although Manager Chris Wagnon was a bit lonely in right -- but he was ready if called upon.
In all, The Guys were limited to two hard-earned runs -- both in the fifth inning -- on the evening, and you just don’t win softball games scoring two runs. You just don’t.
On the offensive side of things, the Mucksters got all their scoring done in innings two through four. Rick Browning doubled with one out, and Don Dennler followed with a single to bring him home.
All that was prelude to the big third inning that saw six ‘Rakers cross the plate and basically put this one away. Luke Abbott drove one to left center that went for a triple, driving in Yurkus. Matt Knauff went Abbott one better, driving one to the same spot, just even deeper and even farther over The Guys outfield. Knauff’s shot was good for a two-run homer, but the Muckity-Mucks weren’t done yet. Bob Brindley, Striegel and Wagnon all singled to load the bases and each of them came around to score on RBI contacts from Browning, Dennler and Kroll.
The Muckies tacked on another one in the fourth, when Yurkus flashed his newfound power by pulling a deep drive to left that went for a triple. Abbott followed with a sacrifice fly (good situational hitting, that) to extend the lead to 8-0.
After that it was up to the defense to hold off the young and joyless Guys for the next three innings, and the ‘Rakers were more than up to the task.
Thus the playoff push continues and thus the Rakesters continue to discover that if they do well in the game’s three key areas, much fun and good things inevitably follow.

'Rakers are feelin' it against Untouchables
CONCORD -- Two wins a row? A winning record? Are such things even possible?
Oh yes, yes they are, say the Muckrakers in joyful unison after outlasting the Untouchables 18-14 on Thursday, giving the Lads of Parking Lot a 2-1 mark for the Fall League season and rare back-to-back triumphs. The 'Raker record book would have to be located and dusted off to find out the last time Our Heroes backed up one win with yet another win.
On such things are playoff surges built.
And to think the 'Rakesters were staring forfeit in the face in the light of one of those dreaded 6:15 affairs. Yet manager Chris Wagnon managed to scrape up a lineup for an Untouchable team that was yearning for its first win of the Fall campaign.
It was a makeshift 'Raker lineup that finally took Field 3. In another masterstroke, Skipper Wagnon placed Luke (Roover) Abbott at second base, forming a formidable keystone combination with shortstop Randy Striegel. The Men of Muck also welcomed back to its bosom Tony (Rally Belly) Hicks, making his '10 Fall League debut. Making his Muckraker debut of any league was Burger, who proved a valuable ally in upping 'Raker numbers to the optimal 10.
Somehow, this combo clicked like it'd played together for years. The Mucksters rapped out 18 runs and 20 hits, including an eight-run outburst straight out of the box in the first inning. The Muck-In-Ators needed all that and more as the Untouchables proved both relentless and pesky. But the Mucksters stayed resilient and refused to fold at any juncture, remaining a D/E force to be reckoned with.
Heroes were vast and many, but special mention must be given to Wagnon, who continued his sterling offensive play with a 4 for 4, five-RBI evening. Striegel continued to hit the ball hard and often (4 for 4, three ribbies). Don Dennler got into the hit column in a nice way (2 for 2, a pair of runs driven in).
This winning streak thing is something the Mucksters can get used to. Did anyone hear "three in a row"?

'Rakers Pour It On, defeat 9 Mugs and a Pitcher
CONCORD -- A new-look alignment -- and no, we’re not talking about the Rat in Right -- and some good, old-fashioned clutch hitting propelled the Muckrakers to their first victory of the 2010 Fall League season, a 16-6 thrashing of 9 Mugs and a Pitcher on Thursday on Field 1.
That your local Mucksters evened their ledger at 1-1 could at the very least partially credited to some nifty outside-the-box thinking by the thinking-man’s manager, Chris Wagnon. In a master stroke, the Rakesters’ brain trust took usual No. 5 hitter Luke Abbott and inserted the “Roover” into the leadoff spot. Habitual leadoff guy Mike Yurkus dropped down to the No. 10 hole, in essence giving the ‘Rakers back-to-back leadoff men in the lineup. Genius, or what?
Abbott added a whole new dimension to the top spot, blasting four hits including a triple and scoring three times in setting the tone for what turned out to be a 22-hit smackdown of the 9 Mugs.
Yet this one did not start out being the rout it turned out to be. In fact, the Rake-meisters had a possibly deflating first frame, in which they had three hits yet could not muster a single run. They more than made up for that disappointment in the second inning when the big hits started to fall to the tune of a seven-run inning, with Abbott, Randy Striegel and Wagnon each tripling, the Lukester and Randy both plating two runs with their three-baggers.
But after five innings, 9 Mugs was still annoyingly hanging around, trailing only 10-6. In the top of the sixth, however, the Men of Muck applied the afterburners, rallying for six runs to provide some welcome breathing room.
Abbott, Chace Bryson (3 for 4) and Matt Knauff (3 for 4) all singled to loaded the bases. Striegel following with a vicious line drive right at the third baseman for out No. 1. But the good times started right up again as Ben Enos (3 for 4, three RBI) doubled in a pair and the Rake-N-Ators were very much good to go.
