Iron City shows its mettle, beats Muckrakers
CONCORD -- Well, as least it wasn’t a walk-off.
For the first time in three games, the Muckrakers’ Thursday night tilt was decided before the last at-bat. It was not necessarily a good thing in this case, as the hometown ‘Rakers sustained a 21-9 defeat at the hands of Iron City on Field Three.
This one almost didn’t take place. On Thursday afternoon manager Chris Wagnon confronted the possibility that the Mucksters would not be able to assemble the league-minimum eight players. The ‘Rakers were finally able to send 10 to the field but were still missing some stalwarts and lineup regulars.
Iron City bracketed big rallies in the first and seventh innings, scoring six times in the first and seven times in the seventh, and it never had a scoreless stanza. The Men of Muck endeavored to keep up but instead sustained their second straight Fall League defeat, dropping their record to 1-2.
Matt Knauff continued his fine Fall League bashing with his four RBI game, and Chace Bryson singled in each of his four plate appearances. Wagnon (2-for-4) again had a multiple-hit game. Dave Alcorn (2-for-3) continued his resurgence at the plate. And Mike Wolcott, in his final softball appearance in his 40s, went 2-for-4 for his first ‘Raker hits of the season. How he was able to accomplish this while putting the finishing touches on WallyStock is beyond the comprehension of this reporter.
Wolcott vows to serve up the beverages that survived WallyStock to the Muckrakers on Thursday, as well as provide a little Pink Floyd on the six-string. Let’s hope the Muckrakers strum up some winning notes beforehand.

'Rakers walk off season in style
CONCORD -- Them Muckrakers sure know how to end a season, don’t they?
On a balmy -- thank you, Bob Brindley -- Thursday night on Field 2, the Mighty Mighty Raketones looked a three-run deficit in the eye going into the bottom of the seventh, rolled up their sleeves and got to work, manufacturing four runs without so much as making one out and concluded a non-playoff Summer League regular season with a thrilling, incredible, if-you-missed-it-you-missed-it 14-13 triumph over Super Crew, which probably hopes it never meets up with another Muckraker for as long as it shall exist.
That this would be a different kinda affair, even by ‘Raker standards, was foretold long before gametime, when Courtney Love’s even whackier older sister decided to drop in on some early evening ‘Raker beverage intake. The wackiness quotient remained high when manager Chris Wagnon opted for pull the batting order out of a hat. Literally. I mean, Dave Taxier batting second? Please.
Yet things proceeded in a fairly routine matter when the game actually began. Super Crew scored some, the ‘Rakers scored some, sometimes one team looked pretty good, sometimes it looked pretty bad -- such is life in D league.
Mat Petersen blasted a leadoff homer in the second, at Matt Knauff went yard for the second straight game with his two-run jolt in the fifth. But things got dicey for the Men of Muck when they went scoreless in the sixth, and SC surged ahead 13-10 going into the bottom of the seventh.
But what happened next is why I love me some ‘Raker.
Chace Bryson (3-for-4, three runs, two RBI) singled smartly leading off. The ‘Rakers got a further foot in the door when Knauff reached on an error in left. Petersen singled, plating Bryson, and Rick Hurd, the potential winning run, singled. With Mike Yurkus imploring “don’t strike out!” from the dugout, Brindley did anything but, ripping a double to bring in Petersen. SC opted to walk Brian Kroll to load the bases. A smart bit of strategy, except it brought Yurkus to the plate. Being selective at the plate, the batting-title-minded Yurkus found the pitch he liked and ripped it to left, the single bringing home Hurd with the winning run as the ‘Rakers erupted in joy.
Afterward, Yurkus enjoyed the special postgame beverage reserved for heroes. But Yurkus chug-a-lugged for the whole ballclub, as there was no shortage of heroes on this night of D-league nights.

'Rakers slam, lose to Local 302, then party on
CONCORD -- Children frolicked on the banks of the creek, adults enjoyed beverages on the shady, grassy knoll as night descended, a lone shopping cart rested mutely like a modern sculpture on Concord’s finest waterway.
It was a postgame scene fashioned from seasons of experience by your Muckrakers, who’ve made competitive softball and attendant after-party a midsummer tradition since the early ‘00s.
Your ‘Rakers can play hard and party hard, as evidenced before, during and after a 20-8 loss to Local 302 on the “Pixieland” Field 4 last Thursday.
The Men of Muck did most of their partying early in this one. They threw a scare into this largely C-league concoction by tallying three times in the first inning to take a 3-1 lead, then piled on five more scores in the second frame for an 8-2 advantage. That the Rake-N-Ators did not stomp home plate again, thus sending the team’s postseason chances crumbling down like a ton of bricks, slowed the party down not a whit.
That could be because Le Grande ‘Rakier earned its opportunity to shake a festive booty. It was a five-hit first inning for the Mucksters, with Mike Yurkus (2-for-2, two runs scored) singling then scampering home on sturdy legs on Matt Knauff’s sacrifice fly.
The Mucksters outdid themselves in the second, as Tony Hick and the inevitable Yurkus each drew two-out walks to spark the nascent rally. Things looked even better when Chace Bryson (2-for-3, two runs, one ribbie) singled to load the bases. That’s when Knauff came through big-time, launching a blast to left that cleared the bases for a grand slam, the ‘Rakers’ first of the year and one of the few in their celebrated history, giving the team a six-run cushion.
No, the lead wouldn’t last, as ‘Raker rallies over the next four frames fell short of satisfaction. But did it crimp Muckraker style, in the way they’ve come to know? We are pleased to report that no, it did not. Party on, folks, deep into the summer months and beyond.

Kings of Pop? Not Muckrakers in 14-8 defeat
CONCORD -- Sometimes your friendly neighborhood Muckraker beat writer second-guesses himself, thus possibly saving his hide from a lifetime of karma deficit.
This is such a time, as your humble blog-scribe had intended on posting a story on the Muckrakers' last game, a 14-8 defeat to Turn 2, with the story laced with several references and attempted witticisms based on the death of Michael Jackson. Then your Timid Typist read an impassioned appreciation of Mr. Jackson's career from 'Raker teammate Tony Hicks and instantly felt much guilt at what he was about to publish. OK, the headline above is pretty much a shot at MJ, so we'll let that stand as a warning as to the depths this column nearly stooped.
On to Plan B.
Let us just say that last Thursday's loss on the blustery evening dropped the 'Rakers to 3-5-1 on the year, and also ended the ‘Rakers’ four-game unbeaten string. The Men of Muck hadn’t been handed a setback since May 5, when they dropped a 13-5 decision to Wake the Monster/Beeline, which by no mean coincidence is who they play in this Thursday’s tilt (7:20, Field 3).
The game against Turn 2 was tight for several innings as the Noble Opposition scored just two runs through the first four innings. But the Muckrakers defense got a little wobbly after that and Turn 2 tallied six in both the fifth and sixth innings.
But Muckraker Nation had reason to be poud of its lads, who stuck around for the whole six innings. Matt Knauff, Rick Hurd, Dave Taxier and Ben Enos all had multiple-hit outings, and Mike Yurkus (two walks), Randy Striegel, Chace Bryson and Brian Kroll all recorded RBI.

The Men of Muck hadn’t been handed a setback since May 5, when they dropped a 13-5 decision to Wake the Monster/Beeline, which by no mean coincidence is who they play in this Thursday’s tilt (7:20, Field 3).
The game against Turn 2 was tight for several innings as the Noble Opposition scored just two runs through the first four innings. But the Muckrakers defense got a little wobbly after that and Turn 2 tallied six in both the fifth and sixth innings.
But Muckraker Nation had reason to be poud of its lads, who stuck around for the whole six innings. Matt Knauff, Rick Hurd, Dave Taxier and Ben Enos all had multiple-hit outings, and Mike Yurkus (two walks), Randy Striegel, Chace Bryson and Brian Kroll all recorded RBI.
There. Not the most imaginative prove ever committed to blog, but it'll have to do. The Muckrakers have a lot of work to do, and they need all the karma they can muster.

Muckrakers' non-beaten streak continues
CONCORD -- My, but those Muckrakers sure find ways not to lose.
Going into last Thursday’s tilt vs. Dianda Plaza, the Muckrakers had two conventional wins and a forfeit under their belt. And after Thursday’s play against their heated rival, the Men of Muck still had yet to recently gulp the bitter beer taste of defeat.
But no, victory was not to be had either, as the ‘Mucksters came away with a sibling-slobbering 10-10 tie, a ballgame that coulda been a loss, but coulda been a victory as well, if the stars had aligned in a slightly different manner.
This one turned on the fateful seventh inning, when both teams frittered away opportunities to take the lead.
For the ‘Rakers’ part, they got back to back singles from Matt Knauff (3-for-4) and Randy Striegel (3-for-4) and a walk to Rick Hurd (1-for-3), loading the bases with one out. But then came a force out at the plate, followed by a vicious line drive by Bob Brindley (3-for-4), which was somehow snagged by the Dianda Plaza first baseman to retire the side.
Sigh.
In the bottom half of the frame it was Yer Rakers’ turn to wiggle out of a jam. DP had the winning run at second base, yet made a pair of outs to end the game, with each team forced to settle for one point in the standings.
The ‘Rakers did most of their offensive damage in the first inning in this one, piling up five runs in the top of the first. Der SpringleMucks then scattered five more runs over the next six frames.
But the real highlight to this non-win was the play of the outfield. Seldom have Knauff, Mat Petersen, Lucas “ROVER” Abbott and Brindley acquitted themselves so well over the greensward.
Petersen in particular made a catch that will go down as one of the finest in Muckrakers history. Starting in right-center, he ranged far to his left to make an over-the-shoulder catch of a deep drive off some unfortunate Dianda Plaza batter. Outfield plays don’t get much Web Jem-mier than that.
The entire outfield, and even the infield at times, had their moments, contributing to a midseason run that has put Wagnon's Wacky Wingnuts back in the Thursday night C/D league playoff picture.

Taxier puts on superstar performance, realizes it was all a dream
CONCORD -- It was the greatest performance in the history of the universe. Dave Taxier tossed a slow-pitch no-hitter, striking out all 21 he faced, and hit four grand slams as the Muckrakers devestated the Blockheads 16-0 on Field 2.
Wow, that was kinda fun to write.
And certainly less painful than what actually happened, which was the aging right-hander slipped and fell backing up a play during the intrasquad that ensued after the aptly named Blockheads declined to appear last Thursday. The fabled innings-eater pulled a muscle in the process and was listed as "out" on Friday, "questionable" on Saturday and Sunday and upgraded to "possible" on Monday.
All kinds of cool stuff happened during the intrasquad, such as Mike DeCicco blasting one of the longest drives of his career, Bob Leal making a welcome re-appearance and Clayton Hurd taking a well-deserved at-bat, but your correspondent wasn't around for most it as he hobbled on home with his leg smarting like a sonuvabitch.
Whatever.
What really matters is that the Muckrakers have an opponent this week who'll most likely show up. Dreaded rival Dianda Plaza dispatched Those 'Rakers 10-9 in the season-opener, so the Men of Muck have their work cut out for them if they're to extend their winning streak to four in row. Gametime is 9:30.
If the pitcher stays upright, Muckraker Nation has a chance.
