Muckrakers fall in season lid-lifter

CONCORD -- It wasn't for lack of inspiration, but the rude truth of the matter is the Muckrakers won't go undefeated this season, not after sustaining a 21-15 setback to The Guys on Field 4 on Thursday night.

Before the 'Rakers barely had time to say "hi how are ya, how did your offseason go?" they found themselves down 7-0 after an inning and a half. They spent the rest of the evening playing comeback, making several valiant attempts to tie and take the lead, but ultimately falling short.

Yet clearly the inspiration was all provided by the 'Rakers side. Returning to action Thursday was Matt McCall, who missed the majority of the 2013 campaign after suffering a devastating soccer injury. And here he was, sporting Muckraker colors (whatever they are) and giving it his all.

He wasn't just taking up space -- he was one of the night's leading offensive stars. McCall singled and scored a run in the second inning, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third, then delivered his biggest shot, driving in three runs with his bases-loaded triple during a six-run uprising in the fifth stanza.

Oh yeah, Mr. McCall also singled and scored another run in the bottom of the seventh, when the 'Rakers were making their last-ditch attempt at an amazing comeback.

There were Muckraker heroes all over the place, among them Chris White going 4 for 4, and Marshall Murray, John Cavenaugh, Scott Brama, and Chris Wagnon contributing multi-hit games. Fine defensive plays we're turned in.

It didn't result in an opening-night win. But this inspired Muckrakers ball club will not be held down long.
