What the hail?! Muckrakers' first game postponed

CONCORD -- To say the Muckrakers' summer season has gotten off to a slow start would be an understatement.

There was the Week 1 bye. Already a half-game out of first place, the 'Rakers tried to get the season under way vs. The Guys on Field 2. And when the nine Men of Muck gathered around 6 p.m. for the 6:15 tilt, conditions were on the chilly side, but dry.

But that didn't last long. First the rain came down, and then the colder, heavier stuff -- namely hail -- arrived. The 'Rakers retreated for the semi-shelter of a nearby tree, waiting to see if there would be a ballgame played this night. Well, the hailstorm went on for minutes more, until the entire field was covered in the cold stuff. No game tonight, thanks for coming, better luck next week.

This eventually led to some discussion of weatherly concerns, namely, why was there hail and not snow. Catcher Brian Kroll made a brave stab at explaining the hail process v. the snow process, but in the final analysis, we had hail instead of snow and that was simply that.

As of this writing, the City of Concord had yet to reschedule the game, although since an incredible five bye weeks have been built into the schedule, carving out a re-play time shouldn't be too difficult.

So the Muckrakers will make another brave attempt at getting the summer-league show on the road next Thursday at 6:15. Just to be safe, be sure to bring your mukluks and snow shoes. It never hurts to be prepared.
