Rivergoats treat Muckrakers like farm animals

WALNUT CREEK -- The Muckrakers showed up Thursday expecting another contest with the Warriors. Lo and behold, the Walnut Creek softball association has a little surprise in store. No, it is not the Warriors you shall play, it said, it's the first-place Rivergoats who you will play.

Great.

Making matters worse was the Muckies were sadly shorthanded. Leading power source and starting pitcher Matt Petersen was unable to attend, and neither was Darby, his partner in crime, who is still on the DL.

The Mucksters did welcome Luke Abbott back into the ranks, and backup pitcher Dave Taxier was thrown into the breach. Amazingly enough, the Muck-and-Grinders took a 5-0 lead after one innings, but the good times stopped rolling after that, and Win No. 2 remains somewhere on the distant horizan.

Still, Abbott, Taxier and Dave Belli enjoyed two-hit evenings, and Rick Hurd was a welcome help to the team which fielded just nine players for the first time this season.

The Muckrakers will look for a better turnout this Thursday for their ballgame vs. Shadowbrook Vineyard.
