'Rakers rally for epic tie vs. Shadowbrook Vineyards

WALNUT CREEK -- In perhaps the greatest tie ballgame in all recorded history, the Muckrakers pulled out a 22-22 deadlock against Shadowbrook Vineyards on Field 1.

Things could hardly have looked glummer for the local 10 as the 'Brookers piled up 17 runs in the top of the first. A bloop here, a bleeder there, and before you knew it the Muckrakers were nearly down 20 before they'd even had a chance to swing the bat.

Sure, the 'Muck-and-Grinders scored seven of their own in the bottom of the first, a Chase Bryson (4-for-4) two-run single doing the most damage. But the deficit was still 10, and there was still much softball yet to play.

But something magical began to take root. Shadowbrook's offense, perhaps now tired, stopped producing big innings. And the 'Rakers continued to chip away -- seven more scores in the second inning, and three more in the third.

The Mucksters entered the final fifth inning needing five runs to stave off defeat. And guess what they did. Yup, pappy, that's right, they put up the necessary five.

Bryson continued his spritely hitting with a leadoff single. Noting how good an idea that was, Chris Wagnon, Dwayne Giron and Dave Belli also singled. Dave Taxier grounded into a fielder's choice, but even that scored a run. Steve Moscatelli and Mike Gale also followed up with hits, and Dave Alcorn was safe on an error to move the inning along. Matt Petersen (three hits, three RBI) singled to plate two, Gale stomping the plate for the tying run.

No, not quite a win, not officially, but one must agree it was a tie for the ages.
